Around and About Main Street
Project Overview
An extension of the Old Town Algonquin project, the Around and About Main Street project improved traffic flow and safety for road users of North Main Street.

Work included:
  • A roundabout at North Main Street and Cary-Algonquin Road that provides traffic calming for all vehicles. Traffic calming improves safety by reducing vehicle speeds while allowing traffic to move freely and efficiently.
  • Construction of a new driving surface on North Harrison Street from Blackhawk Trail to Algonquin Road (IL Route 62), and west of Washington Street. As part of this work, the contractor also placed a new driving surface on Madison Street, Front Street and Edward Street, as well as repaired and replaced driveway aprons, sidewalks and curb and gutter.
  • A narrowing of pavement width on North Main Street from Cary-Algonquin Road to Riverview Drive. The narrowed road protects all road users by slowing traffic and helping drivers be more alert to bicycles, pedestrians and other drivers.
  • A bicycle path from the roundabout to Riverview Drive, Park Street to North Harrison Street and connection to the Old Town Prairie Trail on South Harrison Street. The path is part of Algonquin’s continuing commitment to provide greater access to businesses and other services for all residents and promote healthy lifestyles.
  • A switchback road at Riverview Drive and Main Street. A switchback describes a road that is built on an incline and has a sharp curve or turn. This switchback provides one-way access to Riverview Drive from Main Street.​

The Village is excited to announce that construction is officially complete on all elements on the roundabout project! As part of this project, the Village has accomplished:
  • Safer roadways through the:
    • Installation of traffic calming measures including the roundabout at North Main Street and Cary-Algonquin Road
    • Construction of a new driving surface on North Harrison Street from Blackhawk Trail to Algonquin Road (IL Route 62), Madison Street, Front Street and Edward Street
    • Repaired and replaced driveway aprons, sidewalks and curb and gutters
    • Safe, dedicated travel space for pedestrians and bicyclists through a new bicycle path from the roundabout to Riverview Drive, Park Street to North Harrison Street and connection to the Old Town Prairie Trail on South Harrison Street
    • Created a switchback road at Riverview Drive and Main Street

Roundabouts are safer than normal intersections as they reduce conflict points between vehicles. As you approach the roundabout look left, yield to approaching vehicles and pedestrians and then proceed!
